Crowley Temple Church was started in 1970 by Eld. Archdale Crowley. He pastored until his death in 1982. His assistant pastor, Eld. Clint Brushard, II, became the pastor in 1982. Eld. Crowley was a very loving and generous man. He was always willing to help someone. In 1975, Rev. Daniel B. Tolliver, became the choir president. He was a gifted musician. He took the choir to new heights. The choir was often featured at area musicals and concerts. In 1982, Eld. Clint Brushard, II, made sweeping changes, many of which were misunderstood by the membership. Eld. Brushard asked Rev. Tolliver if he wanted to be the assistant pastor of the church. Rev. Tolliver declined. Eld. Brushard appointed his son, Eld. Clint Brushard, III as the assistant pastor. Many members felt that Rev. Tolliver should have been appointed as assistant pastor. This caused something of a riff between some of the members and the first family. The next change was that Pastor Brushard appointed his other son, Min. Davis Brushard as the minister of music. The membership felt that the pastor was taking away Rev. Tolliver's position since Rev. Tolliver had always been the organist for the church. What the membership didn't know was that Rev. Tolliver had asked Pastor Brushard to appoint his son Davis as the minister of music. Rev. Tolliver felt that the choir and church needed some young talent at the helm. Rev. Tolliver had some other ideas about where he wanted the choir to go, so he remained as the choir president. Only a handful of members left the church. The church grew steadily. The choir was growing rapidly. There were many talented singers in the choir. Rev. Tolliver decided that the choir should release an album. After he permission from the pastor, he began shopping around for a record label. The church was small and no one would take a chance on them. Rev. Tolliver decided to start his own label. Rev. Tolliver asked the church and choir to come up with 15% of the money that he needed to start the label. He came up with 42% of the money and two area businessmen came up with 21% each. With that money, Rev. Tolliver started Baumann Records in 1984. The Crowley Temple Mass Choir released its first album in November 1984. In 1985, Pastor Brushard's daughter, Helen Brushard, then 19, asked her father if she could start a children's ministry at the church. He allowed her to. The ministry has been a success. The church has the most popular children's ministry in the metroplex. Because of the children's ministry, the youth ministry had to be overhauled so that the youth would remain interested in church after they left the children's ministry. The youth ministry has become as popular as the children's ministry. Many area college students participate in the youth services and youth choir. The youth/young adult choir was featured on one of the Mass Choir's albums. The youth/young adult choir is getting ready to release their own album on Baumann Records in late 2002. Crowley Temple is on the move for the Lord. Crowley Temple joined the Maddocha Fellowship of Pentecostal Churches in 1988. |
